History
The church here owes its origins to the priors of Durham who had a retreat grange built under Prior Hugh of Darlington. A church was built in 1259, but the present building dates from circa 1728 with further rebuilding in the 19th Century. Today you can see some of the stone remains of the earlier grange which, together with the church and a small cluster of houses, is surrounded by sparsely populated farm land. Much of the church’s interior furnishings were donated by the Ritson family of nearby Calf Hall. The churchyard boasts a lych gate leading on to the fields, while access to the church is via a gated farm lane.
